POSITION OVERVIEW Make a Difference in the Lives of Veterans
The VA Palo Alto Health Care System is seeking skilled and dedicated HVACMechanics to join our Maintenance and Operations (M&O) team on a temporary basis. Your expertise will play a vital role in maintaining critical facility operations and ensuring a safe, comfortable environment for our Veterans and staff.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
At least 4 years of journeyman-level experience working on industrial HVAC systems.
A formal degree is not required for this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform repair, modification, maintenance, and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and related equipment.
Plan, lay out, and install climate control units, ensuring proper system balance and performance.
Overhaul and maintain a variety of refrigeration units, including:
Freezers, food carts, heat pumps, water chillers, and solar-integrated systems.
Conduct diagnostics and inspections on internal pressures, temperatures, and system performance.
Respond immediately to service calls for malfunctioning or critical equipment.
Train or assist others in equipment operation and maintenance.
Fabricate ductwork and determine appropriate pipe sizes and materials.
Use electronic meters, thermometers, and balancing tools to ensure optimal system performance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in healthcare or government facilities.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Skills: Ability to read, write, and perform basic trade math; interpret work orders and follow verbal/written instructions.
Safety & Compliance: Knowledge of safety codes and regulations; consistently practices and promotes safe work habits.
Vehicle Operation: Must hold a valid state driver’s license and be able to operate standard work vehicles (e.g., trucks, vans, scooters).
Work Independence: Capable of working with minimal supervision, making sound decisions, and resolving routine issues independently.
Physical Demands: Must be physically fit to lift up to 100 lbs, work in confined or elevated spaces, and perform tasks requiring climbing, crawling, and extended standing.
Work Environment: Comfortable working indoors/outdoors in varying conditions (heat, cold, noise, dust, confined spaces, elevated areas).
Customer Service: Maintains professionalism and respectful communication with staff, Veterans, and visitors; handles conflicts constructively.
Data Security: Adheres to VA privacy and data protection policies; safeguards sensitive information and follows secure access protocols.
